In fact, Te’o’s story has inspired teams in other sports to have fun at his expense. A minor-league baseball team recently announced that they would be holding Manti Te’o Girlfriend Bobblehead Night on Memorial Day Weekend. (They’ll just be giving away empty boxes.)
And on Tuesday night, the NBA’s Cleveland Cavaliers exhibited their own dose of Te’o comic relief when, during the second quarter of their game against the Boston Celtics, they did a “Kiss Cam” bit during a timeout.
But not just any “Kiss Cam.” No…
As Darren Rovell, who first hat-tipped the Internet with this hilarious send-up of the “Kiss Cam” bit, later opined: “On second thought, I’m not sure the Cavs want to be doing a Kiss Cam where they can point to all the empty seats.”
Give the Cavaliers credit: they’re taking the tragedy of having the second-worst record in the NBA this year, and turning it into comedy.
By the way: it turns out the Florence Freedom, the minor league team behind the aforementioned bobblehead promotion, also announced that there would be a “pretend kiss cam” at the game.
I have a feeling Dan Gilbert’s going to be writing a letter to the Freedom.
