Regis Philbin could be the face of the new Fox Sports 1 network when it launches August 1. The plan is for him to host a sports discussion show.

Less than a year after Fox Sports employee Michael Strahan officially replaced Regis Philbin on daytime television, it appears that the two are going to be colleagues.

According to Sports Business Daily’s John Ourand, the recently retired host of “Live! With Regis/Regis and Kathie Lee/Regis and Kelly” – the ;program’s now known as “Live! With Kelly And Michael” – is having “serious” talks with Fox to host a new program that would air on the new Fox Sports 1 channel, due to launch in August. Sources Ourand is citing contend that the program Philbin would be hosting is being compared to “The View,” but with a sports angle (I believe we already have that; it’s called “First Take“).

These same sources are also saying that Jay Mohr, Jim Rome’s heir apparent on Fox Sports Radio, is also said to be part of Fox Sports 1’s plans, either in the form of a new television show, or a simulcast of his daily radio show. Mohr previously provided voiceovers for Fox Sports Net’s “Beyond The Glory” series (think “Behind The Music” for sports), and also starred in the short-lived Fox vehicle, “Action.”

Late last year, one of the first people to be linked to a program on the new Fox Sports 1 network is Jay Glazer, Fox Sports’ football insider (and NFL Network contributor); that is still very much a possibility.

With less than half a year before the scheduled launch of Fox Sports 1 on August 1, the timeframe to align a universe of stars that will help the new network compete with ESPN is getting smaller.

Regis Philbin? That would be a real big dipper of a get.

It looks like he actually has been doing some independent contracting for Fox Sports since he stepped down from daytime TV. Here’s a Regis rant about the New York Giants that he recorded for Fox Sports this past December.
